Wilson W. Smith III is a retired Nike Design Director and Manager of Design Education whose extraordinary 41-year career helped shape the evolution of athletic design. Throughout his time at Nike, he worked across footwear, apparel, retail, architecture, graphics, branding, and product experience, creating innovative designs for some of the world's most iconic athletes, including Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Derek Jeter. A graduate of the University of Oregon, Wilson began his career in architecture before joining Nike in 1983. He later transitioned into footwear design, where he played a key role in developing athlete-inspired products and designed the iconic Air Jordan XVI and XVII. His contributions to the industry earned him numerous honors, including Nike's inaugural Design Achievement Award, the Jan Ernst Matzeliger Award, and recognition as one of America's Top Black Designers by Black Enterprise. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Wilson is deeply respected for his passion for teaching, coaching, and mentoring the next generation of designers. His influence extends far beyond the products he created, leaving a legacy built on creativity, leadership, and service. From the dedication of the Wilson W.
